20th Century's Greatest Hits: 100 English-Language Books of Fiction

The 20th Century's Greatest Hits: 100 English-Language Books of Fiction is a list of the 100 best English-language books of the 20th century compiled by American literary critic Larry McCaffery. The list was created largely in response to the Modern Library 100 Best Novels list (1999), which McCaffery considered out of touch with 20th-century fiction. McCaffery wrote that he saw his list "as a means of sharing with readers my own views about what books are going to be read 100 or 1000 years from now".

25 Books to Read Before You Turn 25

List created by The Guardian to promote reading in children. So which books will engage your children in this National Year of Reading? I consulted leading authors to come up with a list of books everyone should read (or have read to them) at least once – one for every year of life up to the age of 25. Not a regimen: a buffet. These are not books to chew dutifully through, but to relish – titles we hope will kindle or rekindle that vital pleasure in the word. And, of course, for every book that appears on this list there are many dozens more that could, or should, have been here.

Best 25 Irish books of the 21st century: how readers voted

The Irish Times assembled a panel of 60 experts – authors, critics, academics, festival curators, booksellers and journalists – to decide the best Irish novels and short story collections of the years 2000-2025. The result was a ranked list of 100 works of fiction, with Milkman by Anna Burns (2018) decided as the best Irish book of the 21st century. We then asked readers to have their say on what they consider to be the best books from the top 25 – the result of which was quite different from our experts’ ranking.

Between Two Books

Between Two Books was started in 2012, when an Irish teen tweeted Florence with the idea that she should have her own book club. She was quickly joined by a small group of Florence and the Machine fans from all over the world. Florence loved the idea, started recommending books immediately, and BTB was born.

DW's Best 100 German Books

In 2018 Deutsche Welle aimed to create an 'ultimate list' of interesting German-language novels and stories published since 1900 that have been translated into English. This is not a best-of list and there is no ranking. It's a presentation of good books written by writers you may already know — or should definitely get to know. Some books are new; others are being rediscovered. These novels and stories traverse both "heavy" and "light" literature, and ultimately give the reader new insights into Germany, Austria, Switzerland — and even Europe.

Encyclopedia Brittanica's Greatest Books Ever Written

Printed for 244 years, the Britannica was the longest-running in-print encyclopaedia in the English language. Literary critics, historians, avid readers, and even casual readers will all have different opinions on which novel is truly the “greatest book ever written.” Is it a novel with beautiful, captivating figurative language? Or one with gritty realism? A novel that has had an immense social impact? Or one that has more subtly affected the world? Here is a list of 12 novels that, for various reasons, have been considered some of the greatest works of literature ever written.

Esquire 80 Books Every Person Should Read

What can we say? We messed up. Our list of "80 Books Every Man Should Read," published in 2015, was rightfully called out for its lack of diversity in both authors and titles. So we invited eight female literary powerhouses, from Michiko Kakutani to Anna Holmes to Roxane Gay, to help us create a new list. Each participant made 10 picks. It's a new year, a new Esquire.com. We're looking forward to reading and we hope you are, too.

Esquire's 80 Best Books Every Man Should Read (2015)

List published in 2015. An unranked, incomplete, utterly biased list of the greatest works of literature ever published. Esquire would follow-up this list with two new versions, 80 Books Every Person Should Read in 2016, and a revised "80 Books Every Man Should Read" in 2022.

Esquire's 80 Books Every Man Should Read (2022)

A revised version of their 2015 list. Back in 2015, Esquire published a list of “80 Books Every Man Should Read.” It wasn’t our finest moment. The list claimed to be “utterly biased,” and indeed it was. We received criticism from every corner of the Internet, and we deserved it. Only one title (A Good Man Is Hard to Find) was written by a woman, and fewer than ten were written by men of color. It was also a pretty boring set.

Flavor Wire's Top Books, 1963-2013

One book per year between 1963 and 2013. here you will find a single must-read book from each of the last 50 years. Of course, this is by its very nature an absurd undertaking, and many books have gotten the short end of the stick — there’s no other way to do it. The choices here are influenced by the following: the stipulation that any specific author should not be chosen for more than one year, a general focus on fiction over other genres, and the tastes/whims/glaring prejudices of Flavorwire’s literary editor.

For The Love of Books

Ronald B. Shwartz, sent a message to 115 authors with the prompt: "Identify those 3-6 books that have in some way influenced or affected you most deeply, spoken to you the loudest, and explain why—in personal terms. All books are fair game." Many greats responded, among them: Kurt Vonnegut, John Hawkes, John Irving, Susanna Kaysen, Caroline Knapp, Elmore Leonard, Norman Mailer, Frank McCourt, Arthur Miller, Joyce Carol Oates, Mario Puzo, Neil Simon, Oliver Stone, John Updike.

Le Monde 100 Books of the Century

The 100 Books of the Century (French: Les cent livres du siècle) is a list of the hundred most memorable books of the 20th century, regardless of language, according to a poll performed during the spring of 1999 by the French retailer Fnac and the Paris newspaper Le Monde. Starting from a preliminary list of 200 titles created by bookshops and journalists, 17,000 French participants responded to the question, "Which books have stuck in your mind?" (Quels livres sont restés dans votre mémoire?) As Le Monde journalist Josyane Savigneau aptly clarified in her article, the list is not meant to encompass the 100 most distinguished French literary works of the 20th century, but rather to reflect the emotional connections of the French populace.

Library of Congress' Books that Shaped America

The Library of Congress (LOC) is a research library in Washington, D.C. that serves as the library and research service of the U.S. Congress and the de facto national library of the United States.[3] Founded in 1800, it is the United States' oldest federal cultural institution. As part of a multi-year Library of Congress “Celebration of the Book,” the list – initially 88 books, now expanded by the Library to 100 – and its accompanying exhibition at the Library last June 25-Sept. 25 engendered months of public dialogue. Some 165,400 people attended the exhibit and more than 9,000 responded to a survey about “Books That Shaped America” posted by the Library on its National Book Festival website.
